The new Record 12x2 Speed crankset: a new hole-free design for the right hand crank that optimises aerodynamics.

The new carbon fibre Record 12x2 Speed crankset with unidirectional finishing guarantees continuity with the finishings of the entire groupset, whilst maintaining the Ultra-Torque bracket system on the steel axle to ensure perfect transmission of power. The new Record 12x2 Speed crankset can be installed on any type of frame, whether or not it is being used with disc brakes because it optimises the chain line on the frame with a rear hub flange measuring 130, 135 or 142 millimetres, without affecting the Q factor that remains constant at 145.5 millimetres.

The innovative design of the outer chainring ensures faster, quieter derailing owing to the contoured pin. The symmetrical design of the inner chainring teeth allows improved stability with chain crossovers.

The double wheel sizing standards (112 and 145 millimetres) enable reducing the weight through greater use of carbon fibre. There are eight fixing screws for increased structure stiffness. The varying number of pins for each of the three chainring combinations (34/50, 36/52, 39/53) facilitates upshifting due to the optimised free strokes associated with each combination. The special drains on the inside of the outer chainrings optimise performance when downshifting in dead spots.

The chainsets in both groups are a smoother, more aerodynamic design than the previous version with incredible aestheticics. The hollow carbon construction offers a low weight without sacrificing stiffness or reliability. The bolt design has also changed from four to eight, which enhances the chainsets stiffness further. Both models will be available in 165mm to 175mm lengths and compact, semi compact and race chainring options.

Technology

X.P.S.S. Extreme Performance Shifting System

X.P.S.S. is the embodiment of a project conceived with a very specific objective: to give the new Campagnolo 12-speed groupsets the best possible derailing performance. And the Campy Tech Lab has hit the mark once again.

The ascent and descent zones on the chainrings have been designed down to the smallest detail, using mathematical simulation programmes that reproduce the potential movements of the chain on the chainrings and draw the ideal angles of these. Repeated tests in the laboratory have enabled the speed and precision of derailings to be optimised. The profile of the chainring teeth has also been revised in order to render the action of these even more effective, and to ensure that they are perfectly in tune with the 12 Speed chain and the new front derailleur. All of these improvements enable a 25% increase in derailing under load and and a 20% the fluidity of shifting.

Indeed, the secret of this amazing result is the perfect combination and integration of all the components of the drivetrain: each of these is designed to work and function perfectly with the others - this is what enables you to enjoy the extraordinary performance that the new X.P.S.S. system offers.

Ultra-Torque

Lightness, rigidity, simplified assembly and maintenance: ultra-torque. This is campagnolo's answer in the integrated crankset sector. After more than 10 years since its introduction the ultra-torque system, it is still considered, the best performing crank-set spindle in terms of stiffness, low weight and efficiency of power transmission.

Campagnolo found a way to permanently conjoin the semi-axles of the bottom bracket to the respective crankset arms. This redesign made it possible to considerably reduce the lateral dimensions at the axle level and prevent annoying contact with the ankles when turning the pedals.

Assembly is simplistic: one single oversize bolt is enough to integrate the two semi-axles. With regard to torque transmission efficiency, this system is equally as effective as a single piece axle.

Furthermore, despite the narrow side profile, we have been able to position the bearings outside the bottom bracket shell, resulting in greater axle rigidity from the increased axle diameter. This breakthrough was obtained by using an ingenious mechanical system derived from many years' motoring experience in the rotation axle and engine shaft coupling sector: the Hirth joint.

In short , this is a joint with self-centring and self-aligning frontal teeth located in the middle of the bottom-bracket axle where the ends of the semi-axles, integrated with the crankset arms, come into contact.

MPS Micro Precision Shifting System

Campagnolo is constantly focused on the performance of its groupsets for all its ranges, from Super Record to Ekar. Its Micro Precision Shifting (M.P.S.) System fully refl ects this philosophy: absolute precision, speed and a reduction of the distance covered by the chain when moving from one chainring to another.

Mechanical work on the outer chainring is proof of the obsessive attention to detail and the persistence of the engineers at our Campy Tech Lab who expect the maximum performance from all of Campagnolo’s products. The result is amazing and now moving from one chainring to another, even under load, will no longer be a problem!
